7 Things You Need to Know as a Nurse Entrepreneur

Hey, busy nurse! Dreaming about starting your own thing while still juggling the chaos of family/personal life and work? I see you. Nurse entrepreneurship is totally doable, and I’m here to spill the tea on what you really need to know to make it happen.

1. Find Your Thing

The healthcare world is huge, so you’ve got to focus on your sweet spot. Your skillsets or burning interests may not even be connected to healthcare (same). So don’t be afraid to think outside of the (healthcare) box. Love educating people? Start a health coaching biz. Obsessed with organizing? Maybe consulting’s your jam. Want to own property? Maybe start investing in real estate. The more specific you get, the better.

2. Know Your Worth (and Add Tax)

You’ve got skills – You’re out here saving lives and solving problems every day. Channel even a portion of that work ethic and persistence into creating services or products people need—and don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth.

3. Learn the Basics Without Losing Your Mind

No, you don’t need an MBA, but you do need to know the basics of running a business. Think budgeting, marketing, and all the not-so-fun admin stuff. Pro tip: YouTube and podcasts are lifesavers here. (We built a mulit-million dollar real estate investing business on books, Youtube, podcasts and just talking with other experts. It’s totally doable!)

4. Your People Are Your Superpower

Whether it’s other nursepreneurs, mompreneurs, or just your BFF hyping you up, having a solid support squad makes all the difference. Don’t be afraid to DM someone who’s doing what you want to do—you’d be surprised how many people love to share advice.

5. Play by the Rules

Yeah, the legal and compliance stuff isn’t exciting, but it’s important. Make sure you’ve got your licenses, certifications, and any necessary paperwork sorted. A quick chat with a lawyer can save you a ton of stress later, and chatGPT can get you started on a quick checkbox list to preset to your lawyer.

6. Tech is Your BFF

From scheduling apps to virtual meeting tools, tech can make your life so much easier. Find what works for you and let it handle the little stuff while you focus on the big picture. I’m a huge fan of free trials and have taste tested countless apps, software and programs that I wanted to try on for our business.

7. You’ve Got This (Even When It Feels Messy)

Let’s be real—starting a business is not all rainbows and sunshine. There will be hard days, and that’s okay. Keep going, keep learning, and remind yourself why you started.

So, are you ready to build something worth remembering? Whether you’re starting small or going all in, just know you’re capable of making it work. Let’s do this! Drop a comment below if you’ve got questions or want to share your own journey.
